Satwest Aids Sailer
August 2, 2010
Abby Sunderland, the teen who capsized while sailing around the world in May, used a satellite phone
from TVC client, SatWest to talk to her parents while on the trip. SatWest LLC, a local distributor of satellite phones,
provided the phone free of charge to Sunderland, said SatWest President and CEO Brian Barnett. “She was using the phone up to the day that her boat
turned over in the Indian Ocean.” Sunderland’s trip ended when a huge wave hit the boat and broke the mast. She was later rescued by a French fishing
vessel. SatWest LLC, formed in 1999, sells the phones and airtime worldwide, based on satellite services from global providers. The company received a
contract in June from the New Mexico Department of Public Safety to supply satellite communications equipment for a fleet of patrol cars.
